Ireland’s Taoiseach Martin isolated in Washington hotel with Covid

WASHINGTON D.C.: After testing positive for Covid and isolating in a Washington D.C. hotel room, Taoiseach Micheal Martin will chair Tuesday’s cabinet meeting from Washington.

Reports from the U.S. say Martin is"well" and continuing to work from his hotel room in the U.S.

On Monday, Martin hosted his usual weekly meeting from Washington with government leaders, including Leo Varadkar and Eamon Ryan. He has announced that he will chair the weekly Cabinet meeting from Washington.

Some members of Martin’s staff have returned to Ireland, while he remains in isolation in Washington. It is expected that Martin will depart for Ireland as soon as possible.

Sources report that discussions are underway to allow Martin to return to Ireland earlier than the normal isolation period of 10 days, so he might attend this week’s summit of EU leaders in Brussels.

However, Martin will remain isolated until he tests negative for Covid.

Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Coveney has said, "So first of all, the Taoiseach is well. I spoke to him over the weekend. And he is working as it is as busy as ever, but he’s doing obviously most of his calls online," as reported by The Irish Examiner.
